Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder where the ingestion of gluten—a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye—triggers an immune response that damages the lining of the small intestine.
This damage impairs nutrient absorption and can lead to symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, and fatigue. In some cases, it may also cause skin rashes and joint pain.
The only effective treatment at this time, is a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet, which helps to heal the intestinal lining and alleviate symptoms.
