What is a FibroScan?

A FibroScan is a non-invasive scan of the liver similar to an ultrasound. The FibroScan machine is designed to measure the amount of fat tissue and scarring around the liver.

Who needs a Fibroscan?

Anyone who is at risk for fatty liver disease can benefit from the information a FibroScan provides. One of the most wide-spread fatty liver diseases is nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NALFD). There isn’t any one known cause of NALFD, but it has been linked to conditions like obesity, type II diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia), and high triglycerides (Hypertriglyceridemia).

Why is Om Research using a FibroScan machine?

Om Research is participating in studies for the potential treatment of fatty liver disease. The specific condition our studies are looking at is NASH or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. This is a more advanced version of NALFD where scarring is present on the liver. We use the FibroScan as a tool to identify potential patients for the studies and to monitor current patients that are participating on the studies.

Do I need to volunteer for a study to get a FibroScan?

No, you don’t need to volunteer to participate in a study to get a FibroScan at Om Research.
